Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Travelling vanity boxes, also known as dressing cases, became highly popular during the Victorian era as affluent individuals travelled more frequently by train and steamship. These fitted cases were designed to hold personal grooming and cosmetic items securely while away from home.

These boxes were typically crafted from sturdy foundational timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring exotic veneers. Interiors were fitted with velvet or silk linings and organised compartments housing cut-glass jars with sterling silver lids, mother-of-pearl tools, and steel implements.

Authenticity is determined by examining the quality of construction, hand-cut dovetail joints, hallmarked sterling silver components matching the period, and original working brass locks and keys. Makers marks embedded within the velvet lining or on the hardware also help verify the date and origin.

An antique vanity box can be displayed closed on a console table, chest of drawers, or dressing table as a sculptural decorative object that introduces historical texture and warmth to a contemporary room.

Maintain the polished timber using a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain without leaving a heavy residue. Silver elements should be cleaned sparingly with a specialised non-abrasive silver cloth to prevent the removal of historic hallmarks or delicate chased detailing.
