A Carleton House desk is a distinctive type of writing table featuring a curved superstructure fitted with small drawers and compartments enclosing the writing surface, popularised in the late 18th century.

These desks are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, embellished with intricate marquetry or satinwood inlay, brass galleries, and leather-lined writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, natural patination on the timber, hand-applied brass hardware, and genuine marquetry rather than printed veneers.

Pair the traditional wood tones with contemporary seating and minimalist lighting to create a sophisticated focal point that bridges historical craftsmanship with modern functionality.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and maintain the finish using traditional beeswax applied sparingly.
