Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A kidney-shaped desk features a concave front designed to allow the user to sit closer to the surface, flanked by curved drawer pedestals or legs. Popularised in 18th-century France and widely produced during the Edwardian era, these pieces combine ergonomic design with decorative cabinet making.

These desks are constructed primarily from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often embellished with contrasting wood inlays such as satinwood, boxwood, or rosewood. The writing surface frequently features a gold-tooled leather inset, complemented by brass handles and castors.

Authentic Edwardian marquetry desks display precise floral, foliate, or urn inlays, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and solid brass hardware. Examining the underside and drawer interiors reveals timber ageing, saw marks, and traditional construction techniques.

An antique kidney desk serves as a focal point in a dedicated home office, library, or living room alcove. Pairing it with a contemporary task lamp or neutral soft furnishings balances the intricate wood detail with modern aesthetics.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax occasionally along the grain. Keep the desk away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or leather desiccation, and clean the leather surface with specialised hide food.
