A joint stool is an assembled wooden stool built using mortise and tenon joints, held together with wooden pegs. Historically utilised in 16th to 18th-century households as versatile seating or for serving food, they gained the name joint from the specialized joinery techniques employed by carpenters before the widespread use of upholstered chairs.

These pieces are traditionally constructed from quarter-sawn English oak, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints, turned or faceted legs, and peripheral stretchers for structural stability. The timber frequently exhibits distinct medullary rays, characteristic of slow-growth British hardwoods.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, hand-carved pegs, timber oxidisation, and wear patterns consistent with age. Genuine period examples display shrinkage cracks, hand-planed surfaces, and appropriate joinery methods rather than modern mechanical fasteners.

This piece functions effectively as a bedside table, a standalone display stand for sculpture or plants, or minimalist seating in a hallway. Its natural wood grain and historic character add textural contrast and authenticity to modern minimalist or transitional spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels between 40-60 percent and avoiding placement near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate microcrystalline wax helps protect the historical finish.
