Map measurers, also known as chartometers or curvimeters, became popular pocket instruments during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for calculating distances on geographical charts before digital navigation.

These instruments typically featured sterling silver or nickel-plated brass casings, delicate enamel or paper dials, glass crystals, and precision brass internal gear mechanisms.

Authentic pieces from the George V period often feature British hallmark stamps for sterling silver, specific dial configurations for miles, kilometres, and inches, and hand-fitted mechanical components.

Such small curiosities are ideal for display within a glass-topped coffee table tray, inside a tabletop cabinet, or styled alongside books on a gentlemans library desk.

Store the item in a low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight, and clean the silver casing sparingly with a non-abrasive microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that could damage the dial or glass.
