This French Rococo chandelier dates from the 19th century and is made from cast gilded brass with a warm gold finish. The fixture displays a foliate baluster stem decorated with entwined acanthus leaves, eight curved arms, and candelabra sockets fitted with candles. Measuring 59 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 69 cm deep, the chandelier features detailed scrollwork along the arms, a decorative hanging loop at the top, and a pointed finial at the base. The piece works well in a traditional dining room, drawing room, or hallway where a heavy overhead light fitting is desired. It provides a classic candle-lit aesthetic suited for period interiors or spaces lacking electrical wiring.

French Rococo style emerged in the early 18th century under Louis XV, characterized by asymmetrical curves, elaborate scrollwork, leaf motifs, and shell forms. Lighting from this period prioritises organic forms and ornate cast metalwork designed to reflect candlelight.

Traditional chandeliers were produced using lost-wax or sand casting methods for the brass or bronze components. The individual arms, stem sections, and candle drip pans were cast separately, hand-chased for fine detail, and finished with gilding or lacquer before assembly.

Authentic period pieces display crisp hand-chasing marks, substantial weight from solid cast brass or bronze, and natural oxidisation within crevices. Examine the threading and structural pins; older examples feature hand-cut threads and square-headed nuts rather than modern uniform machine screws.

A Rococo chandelier serves as a strong sculptural accent when placed above a minimalist dining table or within a high-ceilinged entrance hall. The warm brass tones create visual balance alongside neutral wall palettes, natural stone, or modern linear furnishings.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or microfibre duster. Avoid abrasive metal polishes or chemical solvents, as these can strip original mercury gilding or historical lacquer finishes; gentle brushing removes accumulated dust from intricate recessed casting details.
