This antique Afghan Baluch prayer rug originates from the 1920 period in a Baluch tribal style, constructed from hand-knotted wool. The piece displays a distinct colour palette of dark brown, indigo blue, and terracotta tones, with lighter cream accents defining the intricate patterns. A central architectural niche incorporates three mihrab arches alongside geometric borders, star motifs, and repeated geometric columns down the prayer field. Additional decorative elements include rows of small serrated arches at the top and a band of square geometric medallions along the lower field, finished with short fringing at both ends. Measuring 124 cm high by 95 cm wide with a 1 cm depth, the textile functions well as a decorative floor covering or wall hanging within a study, hallway, or sitting room. Placed upon a floor or mounted on a wall, the rug brings traditional textile artistry and warm earthen tones into modern interior spaces.

A Baluch prayer rug is a hand-knotted tribal textile traditionally woven by Baluch nomads across Afghanistan and Persia, featuring a directional niche motif representing a mihrab.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool or goat hair on a wool warp and weft, dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic examples are recognised by their soft pile, flat-woven ends, dark muted colour palettes dominated by indigo, terracotta, and deep brown, along with geometric mihrab designs.

A tribal rug works exceptionally well layered over neutral jute carpeting, placed in a hallway, or hung on a wall as a decorative textile art piece.

Suction vacuum regularly without using a rotary brush, blot liquid spills immediately with a dry cloth, and utilise a underlay pad to protect against floor friction.
