Description

English 18thC Estate Made Heraldic Fire Back, Pediment Top, 90cm wide 68cm tall.

A substantial hand forged English antique fire back with a heraldic, armorial crest, circa 1700s and perhaps earlier.

An impressive proportion hand forged, estate made fire back of splendid asymmetric form, the family crest is off centre and the shoulders measurements differ, supporting our belief that this is a 1 off, not repeated cast and most likely on an estate forge.

The heraldic crest features the crown with a lion to the right and an upright dog or hound to its left, the central motif is only partially distinguishable due to lengthy time spent in a fire.

A substantial fire back with a reassuring depth of 4cm in places and considerable weight, measuring 90cm wide, this was for a large open fire.

Firebacks originated in the 15th and 16th centuries in Europe to protect the rear masonry of open fireplaces from extreme heat and to reflect warmth back into the room. Over time, designs evolved from simple utilitarian plates to elaborate works featuring heraldic crests, royal insignia, and mythological scenes cast by regional ironworks.

Traditional firebacks were cast using pig iron poured into sand moulds, often created by pressing wooden carvings or patterns into the foundry floor. This sand-casting method yielded heavy, durable plates with unique surface textures and subtle imperfections characteristic of period craftsmanship.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit deep, organic oxidisation, heavy weight, and hand-cast irregularities rather than the uniform machine-smooth surfaces found in modern reproductions. The crispness of the relief work, composition of the iron, and signs of prolonged exposure to heat and ash help determine age.

An antique fireback can be placed upright against the back wall of an active or decorative fireplace as a striking focal point, or mounted securely to a living room wall as architectural art. Its textured metallic surface pairs well with neutral brick, stone surrounds, and minimalist hearth designs.

Cast iron should be kept dry to prevent active rusting and can be lightly treated with microcrystalline wax or stove blacking to protect the surface and enrich its dark tone. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scouring pads, which can strip the historic patina.
