The Edwardian period, spanning from 1901 to 1910 (with styles extending through the First World War), was characterised by lighter, more refined designs often drawing inspiration from neoclassical and Louis XVI motifs, contrasted with intricate machine-tooled patterns.

These pieces typically consist of a thin sheet of sterling silver formed over a wooden or composition core, with a velvet or baize-backed wooden easel stand, often featuring hand-engraved or engine-turned guilloche surface decoration.

Authenticity is verified by locating official British hallmarks stamped on the silver border, which typically include a lion passant for sterling standard, a city mark such as an anchor for Birmingham, a date letter, and the silversmiths makers mark.

An antique silver frame adds a layer of heritage and polished contrast when placed on a dark wood mantelpiece, a bedside table, or layered within a bookshelf alongside modern objects.

Silver frames should be cleaned sparingly using a high-quality non-abrasive silver cloth or professional polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemical dips that can damage the underlying wooden core or soften delicate engine-turned patterns.
