Description

A fantastic antique walnut chest of drawers, dating from around the 1830-40 period.

It is of outstanding quality and has a beautiful design. It is a great size, with plenty of storage space inside the generous drawers. The drawers have fine hand cut dovetailed joints and wonderful turned handles. The drawers fronts have lovely moulding around the edges, the front corners of the chests have beautifully made corbels at the top, middle and lower edges.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. The walnut has acquired a gorgeous colour tone and natural patina over the years, with some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Walnut was extensively used in fine English furniture making during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, particularly during the William and Mary and Queen Anne periods, before mahogany gained prominence.

Authentic period chests typically feature solid walnut or walnut veneers on secondary softwoods like pine or oak, constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes and tongue-and-groove drawer bottoms.

Authentication involves inspecting the drawer construction for hand-cut dovetails, checking for original brass or wooden hardware, and examining the timber for natural shrinkage, patina, and tool marks consistent with period manufacturing.

An antique walnut chest can be paired with contemporary minimalist decor or neutral walls to highlight the rich grain of the wood, serving as a functional focal point in a bedroom, hallway, or living space.

Maintain antique walnut by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations, and periodically applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber and protect the historical finish.
