Old Sheffield plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a sheet of silver to a copper core, predominantly manufactured from the mid-18th century until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

These pieces typically combined a fused silver and copper base with cut-glass ink bottles, glass or ceramic sanders, and occasionally brass or gilt brass collars.

Authenticity is often identified by observing subtle traces of the underlying copper bleeding through the silver, particularly along edges and high-wear points, as well as the absence of modern silver-plate maker marks.

An antique inkstand serves as a sophisticated desktop organiser in a home study or as a decorative accent piece atop a bookshelf or console table.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialized silver polish formulated for plated items, taking care not to rub too vigorously to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer.
