Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This wrought iron fire screen dates from 1930 and follows the Arts and Crafts Gothic style, finished entirely in a black colour. The structure incorporates an intricate scrollwork frame with decorative upper and lower scrolls, a central grid of horizontal and vertical bars accented by pointed finials, and twin scrolled feet that support the piece upright on the floor. Standing at 69 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 26 cm deep, the screen is soundly made and ready for everyday use. Position this fire guard directly on a fireplace hearth to protect the room from stray embers while adding a rustic farmhouse character to an interior scheme. The sturdy metal construction stands securely on wooden flooring or stone hearths alike, providing both a functional barrier and a decorative focal point for a living space or bedroom fireplace.

FAQs

Fire screens gained widespread use during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to protect occupants from excessive direct heat and flying embers generated by open wood or coal fires. Wrought iron screens were valued for their durability and fire resistance, evolving into decorative architectural elements within the living space.

Traditional fire guards are crafted by heating iron and shaping it using hand tools, joinery, rivets, and welds. Frames often incorporate decorative scrollwork, vertical bars with finials, and splayed support feet designed to maintain stability on hearth surfaces.

Authentic hand-forged wrought iron features slight surface irregularities, hammer marks, and non-uniform scrollwork rather than the perfect symmetry of modern cast or machine-moulded iron. Older pieces may also show authentic oxidisation and joined components fixed with rivets rather than modern continuous welds.

A wrought iron fire screen serves as a structural focal point in both functioning and disused fireplaces. The dark metal finish provides visual grounding against lighter stonework, brickwork, or painted chimney breasts.

Wrought iron should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and kept dry to prevent rust formation. To preserve the finish and prevent oxidisation, a light application of clear microcrystalline wax or specialist iron paste can be applied periodically.
