A portrait miniature is a small-scale painting, typically executed in watercolour on ivory, vellum, or card during the nineteenth century, often housed in a protective metal or gold case.

Traditional construction involved watercolour pigments applied to a thin slice of ivory, supported by a backing card, and encased within a cast brass, pinchbeck, or gold frame with a glass front.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted stippling and brushwork under magnification, natural ageing such as slight fading or foxing, and period-appropriate framing techniques without modern synthetic adhesives.

These small-scale artworks can be grouped in a gallery wall arrangement or placed on a small easel on a mantelpiece to add a layer of historic depth to modern spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and maintaining stable humidity levels to protect the delicate organic materials used in the painting.
