Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian watercolour portraits were produced between 1714 and 1837, characterised by subtle washes of tone, naturalistic skin tones, and detailed depictions of contemporary fashion such as ruffled collars, waistcoats, and elaborate headwear.

Artists generally used gum arabic mixed with natural pigments applied onto woven or laid paper, which was often mounted onto card and housed within gilded wooden frames under glass to protect the watercolour pigments.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate costume details, subtle paper ageing or foxing, hand-carved or molded gilt frames with signs of historical wear, and original backing materials such as wooden backboards or period paper seals.

A pair of period portraits can be displayed centrally above a console table, incorporated into a mixed-era gallery wall, or placed on a mantelpiece to add visual depth and historical character to modern spaces.

Keep watercolours out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintain stable humidity to avoid foxing on the paper, and clean gilt frames gently using a soft, dry brush without moisture or chemical cleaners.
