Edward Smyth, Watercolour Portrait Of Miss Thornthwaite

This attractive watercolour portraits shows Miss C Thornthwaite, a lady who is clearly fond of flowers. Not only does she have colourful flowers tucked under her straw bonnet but she is holding a posy of lily of the valley and roses and stands on a balcony entwined with delicate passionflowers.
 
Painted on card, the portrait is signed reverse by Ed Smyth, 85 Newman St and dated December 1839.
 
The portrait is presented in a handsome maple veneer frae with a deep gilt slip. There is a small loss to the veneer on one corner and a little fading to the watercolour.
 
Edward Smyth exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1819 and 1844.
