Antique Watercolour Painting Portrait of a Gentleman Military Officer

19th century
Description

A most interesting portrait of a gentleman who we believe was a reputable member of the military or aristocracy from the 19th century.

He is wearing a black coat, a black waistcoat and a white chemise of which you can see the collar just above the black stock.

A quite distinctive Red Sash crosses his chest from the right shoulder; we believe that the sash is the symbol of the National Order of the Legion of Honour (Legion d'Honneur, the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits)

A glance of a medal is visible just under the coat's collar.

A watchful eye would also notice that the sitter is missing his right arm: a detail which supports the fact that he was most likely a distinguished military officer although here is wearing a daily attire and is sitting in a quite relaxed manner on a red velvet chair holding a red book.

The portrait is a watercolour and is set in a moulded frame with only slight/minor wear and tear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Watercolour portraiture during the 19th century was popular for capturing detailed likenesses prior to widespread photography. These works typically feature controlled pigment application on paper, depicting sitters in formal dress with soft background washes.

Antique watercolour portraits were created using natural water-soluble pigments applied to heavy rag paper or card. They were often housed under protective glass within gilded or carved wooden frames to preserve the paper from dust and humidity.

Authentic period watercolours usually display natural age-related toning, foxing, or paper darkening under close inspection. Examining the reverse of the frame often reveals hand-cut backing boards, original nails, and period mounting techniques.

Integrate an antique portrait into a modern space by hanging it above a sideboard or incorporating it into a mixed-era gallery wall. Pairing traditional artwork with contemporary lighting creates an engaging contrast between historical and modern elements.

Keep watercolour paintings away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity to prevent fading and mould growth. Frame the artwork using UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials to protect the delicate pigments over time.
