This mid-nineteenth-century Victorian watercolour portrait depicts a gentleman named Charles Phillips, painted by J Bizo in 1847. The artwork is executed in watercolour and chalk on paper, dominated by grey and beige tones, portraying the subject with brown hair, sideburns, blue eyes, and wearing a dark double-breasted coat over a high white cravat. The portrait is housed within a solid brass mount featuring a beaded trim frame, set inside a quality leather folder on a stand with a velvet interior lining. The backing card contains a pencil inscription and the artist's signature alongside a gallery label for F J Paris and Son of Bath, showing age-related wear to the outer case and minor wear to the velvet interior while the portrait remains in clean condition. Measuring 27.4 cm high and 22.4 cm wide, the piece is sized at 27.4 cm by 22.4 cm. Suitable for a gentleman's library or study, the portrait fits well on a narrow wall space or displayed on a desk within its stand. The work brings historical character to a traditional home setting, adding visual interest to a living room, hallway, or office. The combination of the illustrated subject, the solid brass mount, and the framed presentation creates a focal point for interior display. Visitors in a home office or study observe the detailed brushwork and the inscription on the backing card. Collectors of Victorian art place this piece on shelves or furniture surfaces where the portrait and its mount are visible.

Mid-nineteenth-century watercolour portraits are defined by detailed draughtsmanship, soft colour blending, and formal sitters captured in realistic detail. Created before photography became widespread, these portraits captured individual likenesses and sartorial details of the period.

Artists during this era typically executed portraits using watercolour washes, charcoal, or coloured chalks on paper or card stock. These works were frequently mounted under glass in oval giltwood or moulded frames to prevent environmental degradation.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural aging to the paper medium, such as foxing or subtle toning, along with contemporary framing materials. Look for period signatures, dates, or framer labels on the reverse of the backing board.

Oval framed portraits integrate well into modern gallery walls alongside contemporary graphics or architectural sketches. Placing a single framed portrait in a narrow nook, hallway, or alongside a bookshelf adds historic depth to contemporary spaces.

Paper artworks must be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and pigment degradation. Maintaining stable humidity levels and utilizing UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting boards prevents paper discoloration over time.
