The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, emphasising traditional craftsmanship, visible construction methods, and simple utility inspired by medieval design.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised solid quarter-sawn oak, often featuring distinctive medullary ray figuring, along with pegged joints, through-tenons, and subtle decorative cut-outs.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut joinery, pegged shelves, traditional dark wax finishes, and timber patination consistent with age and honest use.

Integrating period wooden furniture into contemporary spaces adds textural warmth and historical contrast, working effectively when paired with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and carefully curated collections of books.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, periodically applying a natural beeswax polish to nourish the timber, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
