Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, manufactured primarily by specialist silversmiths such as Sampson Mordan and Levi & Salaman as both decorative desk accessories and functional sewing tools.

These pieces typically feature a cast or stamped sterling silver outer body, often hallmarked with assay office marks, makers marks, and a date letter, fitted internally with a cork or sawdust stuffing and upholstered with plush velvet or silk.

Authenticity is determined by clear hallmarks, correct weight and gauge of the silver, period-appropriate velvet or silk upholstery, and the specific casting quality characteristic of late 19th and early 20th-century silversmithing techniques.

As a small cabinet curiosity, it can be styled on a writing desk, within a glass-fronted display cabinet, or on a mantelpiece to add a touch of historical whimsy and metallic texture to traditional or eclectic interiors.

Preserve silver pin cushions by keeping them away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, avoiding harsh liquid polishes that can damage the textile insert, and occasionally dusting the silver gently with a microfiber cloth.
