This Victorian brooch is in the form of a butterfly, constructed in silver-topped gold and encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and a central sapphire. The wings are pierced and ornamented with gemstone pave work, featuring red rubies along the outer edges and numerous sparkling diamonds across the framework. Two small red rubies sit above the blue sapphire head, while three graduated green emeralds form the body segments. Curved wire antennae extend outwards from the head above jointed legs, and the entire insect form has a dark antique finish. The brooch measures 4.5 cm wide. In a modern interior, this jewelled insect serves as a decorative accessory to pin onto clothing, scarves, or hats when dressing for special occasions. It suits collectors of antique jewellery or anyone seeking a traditional Victorian accent piece for formal wear or display.

During the mid-to-late nineteenth century, Victorian society developed a deep fascination with natural history, botany, and entomology. Insect-themed jewellery, including butterflies, bees, and beetles, became fashionable accessories symbolising transformation and natural beauty.

Victorian jewellers frequently used a silver-upon-gold technique, setting diamonds and coloured gemstones in silver fronts with gold backings to prevent tarnishing on garments. Natural gemstones such as rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and rose-cut diamonds were commonly incorporated.

Authentic nineteenth-century brooches often feature silver-topped gold construction, hand-cut gemstones such as rose or cushion cuts, and period-specific pin mechanisms, including extended pin stems and C-clasps without safety catches.

Antique brooches can be worn individually on coat lapels, pinned to structured blazers, attached to silk scarves, or grouped together on denim jackets and knitwear for a contemporary layered aesthetic.

Clean gently using a soft dry cloth or a slightly dampened cotton swab avoiding harsh chemical cleansers. Avoid submerging in water or using ultrasonic cleaners, as gemstones like emeralds and closed-back settings are sensitive to moisture and shock.
