This antique Turkish Ottoman prayer rug belongs to the period around 1800 and exhibits a classic six-column design rendered in wool. The piece displays a muted ochre and green ground with dark green panels containing calligraphic Ottoman script in ivory outlined in red, complemented by blue and cream tones, geometric floral borders, and detailed mihrab arches. Visible signs of age include average condition with wear that is heavy in places, a generally low pile with a few areas of foundation showing, and complete, original ends and sides retaining some of the original kilim. Measuring 190 cm high, 126 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the carpet provides a decorative textile element for a gentleman's library or study. The rug serves multiple purposes within a traditional or eclectic interior, functioning effectively as a floor covering or as a wall hanging to add historical pattern and texture to a room. The hand-knotted construction and traditional Ottoman motifs offer an authentic decorative anchor for interior spaces seeking classic textile artistry.

Ottoman prayer rugs, often originating from Anatolian weaving centres such as Ladik or Mudjur, are characteristically designed with architectural mihrab arches supported by columns. These textiles were woven for personal devotional use and frequently incorporate calligraphic script and stylised floral motifs within complex geometric borders.

Traditional Anatolian and Ottoman prayer rugs were hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. Natural dyes derived from plants and minerals provided the distinctive earthy ochre, blue, and terracotta colour palette.

Authentication relies on examining the knotting technique, dye composition, and structural wear patterns. Genuine early rugs feature hand-spun yarns with natural abrash variations, symmetrical Turkish knots, and slight inconsistencies in pattern geometry typical of village looms.

An antique prayer rug serves as a striking focal point when displayed as wall-mounted textile art or layered over neutral base carpets in a study or living room. Its muted tones and architectural geometry harmonise well with minimalist, dark academia, or traditional interior styles.

Vacuuming should be limited to gentle suction without a motorised brush head, and the rug should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading. Professional hand-cleaning by a specialist conservator is recommended, along with using a breathable rug pad if placed on the floor.
