Claret jugs became immensely popular during the Victorian era as formal dining and wine consumption reached new heights of sophistication. The combination of clear glass bodies and intricately worked silver mounts allowed hosts to showcase both the rich colour of the wine and their own social status through fine metalwork.

These pieces typically feature blown or moulded glass bodies, often with star-cut bases, paired with sterling silver or silver-plated mounts. The collar, hinged lid, and handle are securely fitted to the glass neck, frequently featuring chased, embossed, or engraved decorative motifs.

Authentic pieces generally display period hallmarks on the silver mounts, indicating the maker, assay office, and year of assay. Additionally, examine the glass for hand-blown characteristics such as pontil marks, minor imperfections, and genuine wear to the base consistent with age.

This piece works well displayed on a bar cart, sideboard, or within a glass-fronted cabinet to reflect ambient light through the crystal. It can also be used functionally for serving wine during formal dinners, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary entertaining.

Clean the glass body using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives that could scratch the surface. For the silver mounts, use a specialist silver polish sparingly with a soft cloth, taking care not to get polish onto the glass or into the hinge mechanism.
