These French wall sconces date from 1920 and reflect a French Chateau style. They come in brass and glass with a gold colour. Each wall light features a shaped backplate with scrolled arms supporting two candle-style lights with candle sleeves. The design is embellished with clear glass leaf drops hanging from the arms and backplate. The metal surfaces display a gilt finish with visible cast details on the backplate and bobeches. The physical dimensions measure 30 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, these wall sconces suit placement in a narrow wall space, hallway, or flanking a mirror in a living area or bedroom. They require rewiring to British standards prior to installation. The fixtures mount directly to a wall surface to provide ambient lighting, adding period character to domestic spaces.

Originating in 17th and 18th-century France, wall sconcesor appliqueswere developed to cast ambient light by holding candles against reflective backplates, often crafted from cast gilt bronze or brass to enhance room illumination.

Traditional French sconces were constructed using cast brass, bronze, or gilded metal for the frame, paired with hand-cut glass or lead crystal droplets designed to catch and refract ambient light.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut glass with minor surface irregularities, heavy cast metal with visible hand-chased details, and natural oxidisation on unlacquered metal surfaces.

Mount sconces on either side of a modern mirror, artwork, or mantelpiece, or place them along hallways to add warm accent illumination and architectural texture to minimalist spaces.

Dust the metal frame regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and clean individual glass drops using warm water and mild soap, ensuring no abrasive chemicals contact the gilded surfaces.
