FAQs

The William IV period, spanning roughly from 1830 to 1837, acts as a transitional phase between Regency and early Victorian styles. It is characterised by robust proportions, heavy scrolling, architectural influences, and the prominent use of dark timbers such as rosewood and mahogany.

Master cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense, high-grade imported timbers like rosewood and mahogany, often featuring solid construction with hand-cut joinery. Upholstery typically involved traditional webbing, horsehair stuffing, and hand-stitched edging before finishing with decorative braid or gimp.

Authenticity is assessed through timber grain, traditional joinery methods, weight, and signs of age such as oxidation in the wood finish. Characteristic features include deep-carved scrollwork, platform or sabre legs, and hand-forged fixings rather than modern screws.

This piece works effectively as an occasional seat, a dressing table accessory, or placed at the foot of a bed to introduce historical texture. Pairing dark period timber with modern neutral upholstery or clean-lined contemporary surroundings creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Clean the wood periodically with a dry, soft cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the finish without sealing the grain.
