The William and Mary style, prevalent in the late 17th century, is characterised by Dutch influences, geometric ornamentation, intricate wood veneers such as oyster cut walnut, and sturdy yet elegant proportions.

Craftsmen typically utilised native timbers like oak and pine as secondary woods, overlaid with highly figured exotic veneers such as walnut, often accented with brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional beeswax finishes, period-correct brass hardware, and timber shrinkage patterns consistent with late 17th-century craftsmanship.

It serves as a striking focal point in a study or living room, pairing well with minimalist modern decor to highlight its rich texture, historical depth, and intricate wood grain.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically apply natural beeswax to nourish the grain and protect the historical finish.
