Gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, involves applying a fine layer of gold amalgam to a bronze base, a technique that reached exceptional heights during the 18th and 19th centuries in European decorative arts.

These items were typically produced using the lost-wax casting method or sand casting in bronze, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details before fire-gilding or electroplating.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit crisp hand-chasing details, natural wear patterns on high points revealing the base bronze, and heavier weight due to solid metal construction rather than modern lightweight alloys.

They serve as striking focal points when placed on mantelpieces, sideboards, or dining tables, contrasting effectively against modern minimalist surfaces or complementing traditional schemes.

Maintenance requires dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid chemical polishes, abrasive cleaners, or water, as these can strip or damage the delicate gilt surface.
