Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, with makers like Sampson Mordan & Co producing intricate miniature figures in shapes such as animals, birds, and shoes to cater to affluent households.

These pieces were typically crafted using sterling silver via traditional stamping or casting methods, detailed with hand-chased feather or surface textures, and fitted with an internal cork or wood core covered in velvet or silk plush.

Authentic pieces feature clear British hallmarks stamped on the silver body, including the makers mark (such as S.M for Sampson Mordan), assay office marks, and date letters, alongside period-appropriate wear and construction.

Such miniature silver objects are typically displayed as cabinet curiosities, placed on a mahogany writing desk, or styled atop a stack of vintage books to add a touch of historical detail to a room.

Silver components should be maintained with a soft microfibre cloth and gentle silver polish applied sparingly to avoid the fabric, while the velvet or plush insert should be kept dry and protected from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
