Dutch brass log bins and coal buckets gained prominence during the 19th century, often utilised beside fireplaces to store fuel while adding a decorative element to the hearth.

These pieces were typically crafted from heavy gauge sheet brass, often featuring hand-beaten repousse detailing, cast brass lion mask handles, and paw feet attached with traditional riveting.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural oxidisation, hand-forged joinery, characteristic weight, and tool marks consistent with period metalworking techniques rather than modern machine stamping.

It can be positioned beside a fireplace as a functional log holder or repurposed as a floor planter for large indoor house plants to introduce metallic warmth.

Maintenance requires dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes to preserve the historical patina and surface integrity of the metal.
