Antique Bread Sofreh, Afshar Tribes, Kerman Province, Southern Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

Searching through uninteresting rug auction sites and being offered so many boring commercial rugs these days, what a joy it is, very occasionally, to find an exciting antique rug, bag or a magnificent bread sofreh like this one!

This is what I love about 'the find'! It doesn't happen every day, week or month, but when it does, it makes me very happy.

This stunning flat-weave sofreh was originally used by Afshar nomads for kneading dough on to make the delicious flat-bread.

The spontaneous drawing and mix of blues, reds and yellow in the zig-zags and the charming little stars around the outside, remind me of the night sky.

Made by Afshar nomads in Kerman province, south Persia circa 1910-1920, all the colours are natural and it is complete with beautifully brocaded ends.

The overall condition is very good albeit it has an old repair near the centre.

Size: 1.25 x 1.15m (4' 1" x 3' 9").

Date of Manufacture

Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this Antique Persian Bread Sofreh to the 1910s.

This antique bread sofreh comes from the Afshar tribes of the Kerman province in southern Persia, dating to 1910 in the Persian Tribal style. The hand-woven flatweave textile consists of wool and natural dyes, showcasing a striking palette of pink, indigo blue, cream, and navy. The visible details comprise a central diamond medallion framed by concentric chevron borders, small star motifs along the edges, and brocaded ends, with an old repair visible near the centre. Measuring 125 cm high and 115 cm wide, the square piece offers versatile styling options for modern interiors. In a contemporary home, this textile serves as a decorative wall hanging in a living room, hallway, or study to add texture and authentic tribal design. The vibrant geometric patterns and rich natural colours provide a focal point above a sofa or console table. Regular gentle care keeps the wool flatweave in good condition while preserving the historical character of the nomadic piece.

A bread sofreh is a traditional flatwoven textile crafted by nomadic and village tribes in Persia, specifically designed to wrap, knead, or serve flatbread during preparation and dining.

These textiles are hand-woven using hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft, utilising flatweave kilim techniques coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic Afshar pieces feature geometric motifs, central diamond medallions, chevron borders, and a dense, durable flatweave structure produced in Kerman province.

These compact flatweaves function as wall hangings, mounted textile art, table covers, or accent floor coverings in contemporary spaces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, protect from direct sunlight to minimise colour fading, and use specialist textile cleaners for stain removal.
