This Edwardian campaign pedestal desk is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber finish and stands 76 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 59 cm deep. The top incorporates a red leather inset writing surface bordered by gold tooling, set within a protective brass framework with reinforced brass corner mounts. The kneehole arrangement includes a central drawer above the opening, flanked by three graduated drawers on each side, yielding seven drawers in total. Each drawer is fitted with a rectangular brass drop handle inset flush into the drawer face, accompanied by keyholes. The timber exhibits natural grain patterns across the top and drawer fronts. Separating into three parts for transport, the desk includes brass carrying handles mounted to the sides. Designed for placement in a gentleman's library or study, the pedestal configuration provides a substantial double-sided working surface and extensive drawer storage for documents and writing accessories. The piece integrates brass hardware with traditional cabinetry, suiting domestic office environments.

FAQs

Campaign furniture refers to modular items engineered for portability, originally manufactured for military officers during travel. During the Edwardian era, these pieces retained functional elements such as flush brass hardware and demountable sections while incorporating refined mahogany construction.

Antique campaign desks were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, teak, or walnut to resist warping and transit damage. Solid brass was used for recessed drawer pulls, corner straps, and side handles, while the desktop typically featured an inset leather writing surface.

Authentic examples feature flush-mounted brass hardware that sits level with the timber to prevent snagging during transport. They typically separate into three distinct sectionstwo pedestals and a top sectionand frequently incorporate side carrying handles and hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Position the desk as a focal point in a dedicated study or home office paired with a modern leather desk chair. Complement the deep mahogany tones and brass hardware with neutral wall finishes, minimalist lighting, and modern art to create contrast.

Dust the wooden framework regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the wood grain. Clean and condition the inset leather top with specialised leather balm to prevent drying, taking care to keep chemical cleansers away from the brass fittings.
