This early twentieth-century Ashanti tribal stool follows a traditional form and is fashioned from dark brown hardwood. The design includes a curved crescent seat and a rectangular base, both decorated with geometric relief carving, alongside a central openwork column. The piece receives further ornamentation through profuse shell inlay, metal designs, and colourful bead-work depicting lizards and abstract patterns. Natural wear shows along the edges and surfaces of the dark timber, revealing lighter wood tones underneath. Practical dimensions measure 35 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. Such a compact decorative item suits placement on a fireplace hearth or as an accent piece in a living room, serving as a sculptural surface or a striking display object.

Ashanti stools originate from the Akan people of Ghana, where they traditionally serve as sacred symbols of personal identity, authority, and spiritual connection.

These stools are carved from a single block of hardwood and may feature decorative enhancements such as natural pigments, brass foil, or shell inlays.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, natural wear patterns along the crescent seat and base, and organic wood patination rather than modern uniform finishing.

Place the stool as a sculptural statement piece beside a hearth, beneath a console table, or within an eclectic reading nook to add global texture.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural clear wax occasionally to protect the wood grain and inlaid details.
