FAQs

Hanau silver refers to pieces manufactured in Hanau, Germany, which were often crafted in the style of older master silversmiths and frequently imported into the UK with pseudo-hallmarks or import marks.

These boxes are typically fabricated from sterling silver using techniques such as hand-raising, repousse, and chasing to create high-relief surface ornamentation.

Authenticity is verified by examining official hallmarks stamped on the metal, which indicate the standard of silver, the assay office, and the specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

An antique silver box can be styled as a focal point on a mantlepiece, coffee table, or desk, adding a layer of metallic texture and historical interest to modern spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver cloth to maintain the original patina and avoid damaging delicate high-relief repousse details.
