FAQs

The George V era spans from 1910 to 1936, a period characterised by a revival of historic styles such as Georgian and Regency, alongside the continued influence of Arts and Crafts and early Art Deco design in domestic silverware.

These pieces typically combine genuine hawksbill turtle shell with sterling silver mounts, often featuring pierced work, repousse, or silver pique inlay, where delicate silver wire and plates are embedded into the warm-toned organic shell.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped on the silver mounts indicating the makers mark, assay office, and date letter, combined with the characteristic natural grain, colour variations, and patina of genuine tortoiseshell.

Such decorative objects add a touch of historic craftsmanship and textural contrast when displayed on a polished wooden surface, such as a mantelpiece, dressing table, or side table, where their reflective metal and warm organic tones can be appreciated up close.

Tortoiseshell should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and moisture to prevent warping or cracking, while the silver mounts require careful cleaning with a specialised non-abrasive cloth to avoid damaging the delicate organic material.
