Victorian upholstered benches and stools became widely popular during the 19th century, often utilised in hallways, bedrooms, and drawing rooms as functional seating or footstools to complement heavy period furniture.

These pieces typically feature solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut frames, combined with traditional upholstery materials including leather, horsehair stuffing, and brass tacks.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period joinery techniques, hand-turned wooden legs, natural patina on the timber, and traditional upholstery fixings like hand-beaded brass nails rather than modern staples.

An antique wooden bench works effectively as an accent piece at the foot of a bed, beneath a hallway mirror, or paired alongside modern minimalist furniture to add textural contrast and historical depth.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax, while conditioning the leather periodically with a specialized leather balm to prevent cracking and preserve suppleness.
