FAQs

Silver photo frames gained widespread popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras as photography became accessible to households, often utilised on mantelpieces and dressing tables to display portraits.

Traditional frames typically feature a thin sheet of sterling silver or silver plate mounted over a wooden or composite core, often backed with velvet, watered silk, or wood supported by a hinged strut.

Authenticity is generally verified by examining hallmarks stamped onto the silver border, which indicate the assay office, maker, and standard of purity, alongside period-appropriate backing materials and fastening pins.

These frames add a reflective metallic accent to modern spaces and can be placed on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or side tables, contrasting effectively against matte surfaces and natural textures.

Silver frames should be cleaned periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, taking care to avoid getting moisture or polish on the velvet backing or glass.
