The Georgian era spans the reigns of the four British kings named George (1714 to 1830), encompassing several design movements from early classical simplicity to later ornate Regency motifs. Silverware from this period is characterised by balanced proportions, fine craftsmanship, and adherence to classical architectural influences.

These items were typically fabricated from sterling silver, adhering to the strict standard of 925 parts per thousand. Construction methods involved hand-raising from a flat sheet of silver, casting handles and feet separately, and securing them with silver solder before hand-finishing and polishing.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), a town mark indicating the assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the exact year of assay.

A polished silver vessel adds reflective metallic texture and historical contrast to modern spaces. It can be displayed as a standalone decorative object on a bookshelf or sideboard, or utilised functionally to hold small botanical stems.

Sterling silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish to preserve the original patina and hallmark details. It ought to be stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and handled with cotton gloves to prevent tarnishing from skin oils.
