Victorian silver buttons reflect the elaborate fashion and detailed metalwork of the late 19th century, frequently featuring sentimental or mythological motifs such as cherubs, putti, and floral scrolls.

These pieces were typically crafted using techniques such as stamping, repousse, or casting in sterling silver, often featuring openwork designs and applied shanks on the reverse.

Authentic pieces from this period often bear British hallmarks indicating the assay office, standard of silver, and date letter, alongside makers marks stamped directly onto the metal.

These small objects can be displayed in shallow glass frames, mounted in shadow boxes, or arranged in tabletop display cloches as part of a curated curiosity collection.

Preservation involves storing pieces in tarnish-resistant materials and gently cleaning them with a soft microfibre cloth to maintain the original patina, avoiding harsh abrasive chemical dips.
