Description

Often referred to as 'Bessarabian' kilims, we can state with confidence that this group of floral kilims with fine wool and extensive use of curved or 'eccentric' wefts were woven in neighbouring Ukraine. This piece comes from the Poltava region of Eastern Ukraine and dates to around 1890. It is characterised by the very sophisticated weaving technique which is visible in the close-up images, and by the charmingly simple design. This piece in particular is quite painterly. The design elements are drawn in a quirky manner, asymmetrically. Note the sense of movement in the borders, and the difference between the short borders and the long borders. One can imagine a talented weaver making this piece for her own use. In addition, it is a lovely little size and would work in many kinds of settings. Minor repairs but generally good condition. Professionally cleaned.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Ukrainian Kilim to the 1890s.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ukrainian kilims date back centuries, traditionally woven in rural households using local wool to produce functional floor coverings and wall hangings decorated with distinctive floral and geometric motifs.

These pieces are typically handwoven using a slit-tapisserie technique with spun sheep wool for the weft and cotton or hemp for the warp yarns, often dyed using natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-spun wool characteristics, natural colour variations, slit-weave structural joins, and traditional regional motifs typical of late 19th-century weaving practices.

An antique flatweave can be styled as a floor runner in high-traffic hallways, layered over neutral carpets, or mounted securely on a wall as a textile artwork to introduce texture and heritage character.

Preservation involves gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, avoiding direct prolonged sunlight to prevent fading, and professional specialist cleaning when required to maintain the integrity of the wool fibres.
