This 1930 floor lamp in the Chinoiserie style is constructed from lacquered wood with brass hardware. The piece presents a black finish adorned with hand-painted gold Chinoiserie motifs across a turned and tapering column, along with a circular stepped base standing on three bun feet. The upright stem incorporates classical turning details, terminating in a visible brass bulb socket at the upper section. The lamp measures 155 cm high, 35 cm wide and 35 cm deep. Placement suits traditional and eclectic interiors, functioning effectively at the end of a sofa or in a dark corner of a sitting room to provide ambient illumination. The rewiring ensures the piece is ready for contemporary domestic electrical systems while maintaining its period character for daily use.

Chinoiserie standard lamps emerged in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries as an interpretation of East Asian decorative arts, featuring gilded, hand-painted motifs on dark lacquered wood.

These lamps are typically constructed from turned hardwoods coated in layers of dark lacquer or japanning, decorated with gold leaf or metallic paint, and fitted with brass electrical components.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted brushwork rather than stencilled prints, subtle craquelure or natural surface wear in the lacquer, and heavy turned timber or metal weighted bases.

Position the lamp alongside upholstered seating or in reading corners to introduce vertical height, dark tonal contrast, and historical texture against neutral walls.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid silicone-based polishes or harsh chemical solvents, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect the painted finish.
