Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This Victorian standard lamp dates from the 19th century and combines a polished brass framework with a circular cream and gold onyx tray shelf fitted around the central turned column. Ornate details include scrolled support brackets, a fluted column profile, and three heavy cast feet shaped with decorative acanthus motifs. The metal surfaces display a warm golden tone throughout the entire structure. Measuring 147 cm in height with a 46 cm width and 46 cm depth, the design provides both lighting and a functional surface level for convenience. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or an empty corner of a traditional sitting room, this standing lamp introduces vertical presence and period character to interior spaces. The electrical wiring is fully updated for modern safety standards while maintaining the original proportions and decorative metalwork. Floor lamps of this configuration provide ambient illumination alongside a practical tier for small objects, functioning well beside an armchair or near a reading desk within a study setting.

FAQs

Standard lamps featuring integrated onyx or marble trays became prominent during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Designed to offer both ambient lighting and a functional surface for drinks or books, these lamps reflected the affluent taste for mixed-material metalwork and polished stone.

These lamps were primarily constructed using solid cast brass or bronze for the stem, collar, and decorative scrollwork base. The central tray insert was typically crafted from carved and polished onyx or marble.

Authentic period pieces feature substantial cast brass construction with natural surface oxidisation, hand-finished scrollwork, and original mechanical fittings such as height-adjustment collars. Later reproductions often use lighter, hollow brass-plated metals and synthetic resin in place of genuine onyx.

Position the lamp alongside an upholstered armchair or sofa to serve as both a reading light and occasional side table. Pairing the warm brass tones with rich paint colours, velvet textiles, or dark timber creates a classic accent within a contemporary layout.

Dust the brass components regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive metal polishes that can remove natural patina. Clean the onyx tray using a damp cloth with mild soap, ensuring the stone is dried immediately to prevent staining or etching.
