Antique 800 SilverCherub Trinket Box Ask the dealer for something similar
Description

A very pretty German solid silver table box. It is hallmarked with the German crescent moon and crown mark and the 800 standard mark. I would date it to c1890-1900. It has been superbly designed being embossed with cherubs playing musical instruments whilst two others sing. It is in super condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs. The inside is clean and the lid closes flush. It measures almost 2.5 inches (6.1cms) across by 1 inch (2.4cms) tall and weighs 72 grams. A stunning example.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Antique Silver Musical Box to the 1900s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Continental silver items marked 800 indicate a silver purity of 800 parts per thousand, a standard widely used in Germany and other European countries for domestic silverware and decorative objects from the late 19th century onwards.

These items are typically crafted from solid 800-grade silver, often utilising techniques such as repousse and chasing to create raised, detailed sculptural reliefs on the surface.

Authentic pieces usually feature period-appropriate maker marks, purity stamps such as 800, and natural age-related patination or oxidation within the recesses of the metalwork.

Small decorative silver containers can be placed on a mantlepiece, dressing table, or side table to add a touch of metallic contrast and historic character to modern spaces.

Preserve antique silver by gently dusting with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the desirable historic patina, and storing in a low-humidity environment.
