Cheese scoops became popular in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain to serve hard cheeses like Stilton, which were traditionally kept in large, cylindrical wheels and required a specialized tool to extract portions from the centre.

These utensils typically feature a sterling silver scoop bowl and shank, often paired with a turned wooden, bone, ivory, or mother-of-pearl handle for a comfortable grip.

Authentic pieces bear British hallmarks, which generally include a makers mark, a standard mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, a duty mark indicating tax payment during specific years, and a date letter signifying the year of assay.

Such historic tableware items can be displayed on a sideboard top inside a glazed cabinet or mounted within a shadow box to add a touch of heritage craftsmanship to a dining room.

Antique silver should be hand-washed using mild detergent and warm water, dried immediately with a soft cloth, and polished sparingly with a non-abrasive silver cream to preserve the underlying metal and hallmarks.
