Victorian Scottish pebble jewellery gained immense popularity during the mid-19th century, largely driven by Queen Victorias fondness for Balmoral Castle and the Scottish Highlands. The style incorporates native stones set in silver, often featuring traditional Celtic motifs and revival designs.

These pieces typically utilise solid sterling silver combined with locally sourced Scottish hardstones, most notably various types of agate, jasper, bloodstone, and cairngorm quartz. The metals are frequently embellished with intricate hand-engraved scrollwork and interlace patterns.

Authentic pieces often feature period-appropriate fastenings such as a C-clasp and tubular hinge, alongside traditional hand-carved stone settings rather than modern mass-produced bezels. Maker marks, sterling silver hallmarks, and the natural variations within the hardstones also aid authentication.

While primarily worn as personal adornments on lapels, scarves, or hats, antique brooches can also be displayed within a home setting by mounting them inside shadow box frames or placing them on specialised display stands as miniature works of art.

Antique silver should be gently cleaned with a soft microfibre cloth to maintain its patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage organic stones like agate and jasper. Storage in a dry, tarnish-resistant lined box protects the delicate settings from moisture and physical impact.
