Antique Swedish Neoclassical Floor Lamp

19th century
Description

A fantastic antique Swedish neoclassical floor lamp, made from steel and brass. This was recently imported from Sweden, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

It is of superb quality, with a very bold and beautiful design. The metal has a lovely patina, we have had this re-wired and it is in good working order.

The condition is excellent for its age, with only some extremely minor wear here and there. We have paired this with a lovely grey modern shade that compliments it very well.

We have described this as Neoclassical – However, looking at the decorations on the base, it looks like typical Art Nouveau.

Width base – 38 cm , 15 inches

Width shade – 41 cm , 16 inches

This Swedish Neoclassical floor lamp, dating from around 1890, combines bronze, wood, brass, and fabric elements in a dark brown finish. The structure incorporates a slender, turned vertical column with a stepped collar, supported by a heavy circular pedestal base decorated with moulded gilt leaf ornamentation and raised on small paw feet. A cylindrical grey fabric drum shade tops the column, diffusing light downwards over the metal upright. The lamp stands 180 cm high by 41 cm wide and 41 cm deep overall. Positioned in an empty corner, this lighting piece provides warm, focused illumination for a living room, study, or hallway interior. The dark brown body contrasts against the neutral grey shade, while the gilt details on the base add metallic warmth to the composition. The design integrates easily into traditional and transitional rooms, serving as both a functional reading light and an architectural floor fixture.

Swedish Neoclassical lighting draws inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity, featuring clean vertical lines, fluted columns, symmetrical bases, and subtle gilded ornamentation popularised during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

These lamps were typically crafted using cast bronze, turned wood, and brass fittings, often finished with dark patination, lacquer, or hand-applied gold leaf on decorative elements.

Authentic period pieces display substantial weight in the pedestal base, traditional cast joinery, authentic surface patination, and subtle wear to any gilded highlights around raised carved areas.

A Neoclassical floor lamp functions effectively when positioned beside a contemporary armchair or in an empty corner, where its structured vertical lines contrast with modern minimalist furnishings.

Dust the column and base regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that could strip original gilding or surface patination.
