Ormolu refers to the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold to a bronze or brass base, creating a rich, gilded finish characteristic of high-end decorative pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries.

These fixtures typically combined a cast brass or bronze armature with fire-gilded ormolu, hand-cut crystal prisms or droplets, and sometimes fitted fabric or silk shades.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut glass with subtle imperfections, hand-filed casting seams on the metalwork, traditional pin-and-cotter fastenings holding the crystals, and natural patination appropriate to the age.

They can be used to introduce a layer of historic texture and metallic warmth, functioning well as accent lighting flanking a mirror, fireplace, or headboard in modern or transitional interiors.

Dust the metal gently with a soft, dry cloth without using abrasive polishes that can strip the gilding. Crystals can be carefully washed in warm water with mild soap while detached from the fixture, ensuring they are dried thoroughly before reattachment.
