Measuring 2ft 9¼” wide, the antique trunk incorporates a delightful secret compartment, comprising a suspended internal floor, with a central access lid. This secret compartment would have been used for concealing tea or valuables from prying eyes! The outer teak frame retains the original brass strapwork to the corners, front, sides and rear. The lid retains the original brass padlock hasp, to allow the trunk to be locked whilst in transit. An elegant shaped brass plaque sits in the centre of the lid. The lid hinges are original and in good working order; a steel chain secures the lid whilst it is open. The interior of the antique trunk is clean and dry. The sides of the box retain the original steel carrying handles. This antique trunk would make an ideal coffee table, TV stand, or ottoman at the foot of the bed.
Condition Report:
This is a fine quality Anglo-Indian Victorian campaign antique trunk, constructed from solid teak, incorporating a secret floor storage compartment, complete with the brass strapwork, handles and hasp, circa 1870, in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the exterior, top and leading edges of the box, including the interior but nothing significant considering the age of the item (please see photos). The metal chain, which hold the lid upright when open, is good. The antique trunk retains its original working padlock hasp. The antique trunk has been cleaned and wax-polished, by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop. The antique trunk boasts a stunning colour and patination. The original brass hinges are also in good working order. This camphor wood trunk is solid in joint and ready to use.
