It involves applying successive layers of white liquid porcelain slip onto an unglazed coloured body to build a translucent relief design prior to glazing.

Victorian cabinet plates typically feature fine bone china or soft-paste porcelain decorated with liquid clay slip, translucent glazes, and hand-applied metallic gilding or acid-etched gold leaf accents along the rim.

Authentic pieces feature delicate impasto slip moulding with translucent layers that create depth in the relief figure. Look for impressed or printed Mintons factory marks on the reverse, artist initials, and high-quality gold leaf detailing along the borders.
