Letter openers evolved from paper knives used during the 19th century when correspondence required slicing sealed envelopes, often crafted by silversmiths to match desk sets.

These items are typically constructed from solid sterling silver, often featuring hallmarks stamped near the handle denoting the maker, assay office, and year of production.

Authenticity is verified by checking for official assay office hallmarks, maker marks, and assessing the natural weight, patina, and wear consistent with age.

This piece can be placed atop a stack of books on a home office desk or styled on a surface tray as a functional decorative accent.

Preserve the metal by using a specialised silver polishing cloth periodically to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip the natural patina.
