An interesting and rare early 19th Century red lacquered telescopic Days Patent candle shield. It retains its original label and is appointed to his majesty, stating the ''portability Of Elegance'' It has repousse brass and a Gothic inspired design.

These shields were made to preserve delicate complexions from the heat of the fire or to shade a candle and diffuse the light. Day was a manufacturer which had patented a method of making decorative items in moulded metal, such as vases, candlesticks or stands, in Gothic style.
