Late 19th Century Glazed Bookcase - Manner Of Samuel Pepys

£5,700    $7,722    €6,715
An impressive 19th-century glazed oak bookcase, designed in the manner of Samuel Pepys, inspired by the original 1666 pieces displayed at Oxford University. This early 20th-century example showcases intricately carved Jacobean-style doors at the base, complemented by a pair of glazed upper doors, all of which retain their original glass. The bookcase is elegantly raised on turned bun feet, offering a striking silhouette.

This piece is a tribute to the groundbreaking 1666 design by Pepys, often regarded as the first domestic bookcase. Samuel Pepys held discussions with ''Simpson the Joiner'' on July 23rd, 1666, which led to the creation of twelve original bookcases, now housed in the Biblio-theca Pepysiana at Magdalene College, Cambridge. A further example is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The bookcase is characterized by a rich patina, which further enhances its historical appeal.
